The gentleman on the left is Josh, a sweet special needs man who is filled with joy and spreads it wherever he goes. The gentleman on the right is Pastor Doug, the associate pastor of my new church, who had just finished preaching.
At the beginning of the closing worship set Josh reached up and grabbed Pastor Doug’s hand. Pastor Doug didn’t let go until the end of worship, when he went up to give the benediction.
So when we started singing the 60s hymn “We Are One In the Spirit” by Fr. Peter Scholtes, and the words were displayed up on the screen, I just had to snap a picture.
Because that there. That’s what it’s talking about.
THEY’LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS
by Fr. Peter Scholtes ©1966
We are one in the Spirit,
We are one in the Lord,
We are one in the Spirit,
We are one in the Lord,
And we pray that all unity
may one day be restored:
And they’ll know we are Christians
by our love, by our love.
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
by our love.
We will walk with each other,
We will walk hand in hand,
We will walk with each other,
We will walk hand in hand,
And together we’ll spread the news
That God is in our land.
And they’ll know we are Christians
by our love, by our love.
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
by our love.
We will work with each other,
We will work side by side,
We will work with each other,
We will work side by side,
And we’ll guard each one’s dignity
And save each one’s pride:
And they’ll know we are Christians
by our love, by our love.
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
by our love.
All praise to the Father,
from who all things come,
And all praise to Christ Jesus,
His only Son,
And all praise to the Spirit
Who makes us one:
And they’ll know we are Christians
by our love, by our love.
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
by our love.
Beautiful story that pictures how we should all be as Christians. I haven’t heard that song for years. We tend to keep adding the newest songs and forgetting some of the greats from the past. Today we sang a hymn and then Happy Day and it took me back a few decades. It was really good.

Oh it’s just so hard to frown after a good rendition of Happy Day, isn’t it? There is so much good music, it’s hard to choose some times! I’ve been trying to remember songs we sang in church back in the 70s because those are the only ones my mother remembers… trying to get her singing again 🙂

I have some chorus books somewhere with a lot of those songs, words only, but I usually don’t have any problem remembering the tune. Some of the new songs we sing today are way too complicated to be able to remember. I might manage a line or two, or a bit of the music, but most of them I cannot sing without the words in front of me. Even then, some of them I have a hard time following. And I have played piano most of my life, so it’s not because I’m not musical. But there were some really great songs back then.
